Question: 'What do I need to know before I start painting my wooden garden fence, bench and patio furniture?'

There are a few things to consider when dealing with outdoor items. Any mould and green algae or lichen needs to be removed. If it's not too bad, you can do this with a stiff brush and some Jeyes Fluid. If there's a lot, you might be better blasting it off with a pressure washer with a brush attachment. Wait for it to dry – this may take a few days subject to the weather, then give all surfaces a quick sand with medium-grade sandpaper, about 60 or 80 grit depending on how shabby the wood is. If it's in a poor state, use a coarser sandpaper first, then a finer one.

Once it's sanded give the piece a final clean, wipe down, then paint. Use a brush for hard-to-reach parts, then a roller on the larger, flatter areas. When it's dry, go over again with a fine sandpaper and then paint a second coat to finish.
