How Much Does It Cost To Carpet A Bedroom

How Much Does It Cost To Carpet A Bedroom

Installing a new carpet brings a sense of cosiness and warmth to your home, which is especially important at this time of year.

But, it's something that you usually want to call in the professionals to help out with. And of course, this will come with a cost.

But, how much does it cost to install a new carpet in your home?

There are two main costs to consider when it comes to your carpet fitting:

  1. The cost of carpet fitting (labour)
  2. The cost of the carpet/underlay/consumables (materials)

Of course, the best way to get an accurate cost for your carpet installation is to come in store for a visit and decide on exactly what carpet you want. From there we can arrange a home visit to finalise your quote. But before you do that, you might want to get a rough idea of how much it will cost.

So, in this blog, we'll look at how much it might cost you for the installation of a carpet, and what can impact this cost.

This will help you calculate an approximate cost for your home improvement work and help decide whether it's a feasible option. We've tried to provide an industry wide view of costs, as well as including some of our own pricing.

How much does it cost for a professional to fit a carpet? (labour costs)

Carpet fitting prices are generally priced per square metre. As with most things, there are several factors that might move the cost of your carpet installation up or down.

  1. Who fits your carpet
  2. Size of the area being carpeted
  3. Complexities of installation

#1 Who fits your carpet…

Who you choose to fit your carpet will vary the price that you pay. Pricing for carpet fitting can vary from £3 – £12 square metre depending on what professional you choose and what the job entails.

At Millers, we charge £4 per square metre for standard fitting (with a minimum charge of £40).

Remember, if you are shelling out for a new carpet you want to make sure you are getting an installation team who know what they are doing. All our staff are qualified and experienced, and are proud members of the Carpet Foundation, giving you assurance that we operate to the highest standards of practice in our industry, and can offer you the best advice when it comes to your floor coverings.

#2 Size of the area being carpeted

As the price is based per square metre, the price of your carpet installation will heavily depend on how big the area being carpeted is. Generally speaking, the larger the area, the more expensive the carpet fitting will be.

Although this will also be subject to additional complexities.

#3 The complexities of installation

Is the area being carpeted a straightforward square. Or is it a little bit more complex.

Almost every area can be carpeted, but more complex areas will be subject to a surcharge as they are more tricky and will take more time to install. At Millers we have a surcharge for more complex installations such as hall, stairs and landings, stair runners and areas that need joined.

This is priced on application due to the different sizes, styles and complexities of fitting. We would usually have to carry out a physical measure of the area to give an accurate price.

How much do carpets and underlay cost?

Of course, on top of these fitting costs, you will also have to factor in the costs of the carpet and underlay.

We always recommend when fitting your desired carpet, that you install new underlay so as to protect the longevity of your carpet while also providing a more luxurious feeling underfoot, not to mention the heat retention benefits. We have a range of qualities available to suit your budget, but industry wide prices are between £3 and £14 per square metre for underlay .

The cost of the carpet can vary greatly, depending on the type of carpet (woolen vs man-made) and the quality of carpet that you decide to install.

Industry wide average carpet prices are around £5 – £50/square metre.

At Millers, you can expect to pay around £12 – £25 per square metre for a man-made carpet, and around £18 – £50 per square metre for a woollen carpet. Although, we do have man-made carpets available from as low as £6.99 per square metre.

So, how much does carpet fitting cost?

As with most things, the cost of fitting a carpet will depend on a number of factors including the size of the room, who fits it, how complex the installation is and what underlay and carpet you choose.

The average size of a living room in the UK is approx. 17 metres squared. So, let's use this as an example and assume the room is:

  • A standard shape (ie no stairs, no joins or odd shapes, easy access)
  • Installing underlay (@ an average cost of £7.00 per square metre)
  • Installing a man-made carpet (@ an average cost of £20 per square metre)

The cost to install a room similar to the above would be approximately £68 for installation and £459.00 for the carpet and underlay, making a total of £527 for the carpet supply and installation (for a room at approximately 17 square metres).

Of course, the best way to get an accurate cost for your carpet installation is to come in store for a visit and decide exactly what you want. Then, we can arrange a home visit to finalise and give you a quotation. But hopefully this has helped to give you an understanding of roughly how much it will cost.
